Easter is traditionally the high point of the spring and what better way to celebrate it than with an Easter egg hunt? It’s the perfect way to sprinkle some extra fun and flavour onto this already special day. Whether you're planning an indoor hunt or an outdoor adventure with playful challenges, our guide has everything you need to make this year’s hunt your best. Let’s hop to it!

Why an Easter egg hunt is a must-have tradition

The Easter Bunny started hiding eggs in the UK sometime in the late 16th century, and the egg hunt has been a hit ever since. On the surface, it's a deliciously fun activity, but the true magic lies in bringing families together and creating treasured memories. Who can forget the thrill of seeing a set of white rabbit footprints or finding your first chocolate egg? These little moments will be a joy to look back on for kids and parents alike.

Here’s how to make your Easter egg hunt a triumph for everyone.

Choose the perfect location

Will it rain, or will it shine? Luckily, we’ve got Easter egg hunt ideas for both occasions!

Outdoor adventures

Since the Easter bunny is an outdoorsy character, our preferred option is the classic outdoor hunt. Your garden offers lots of nooks and crannies to hide eggs and plenty of space for kids to charge around and explore. Another egg-cellent option is to team up with family and friends to host a mega Easter egg hunt at your local park. Just imagine the fun and laughter as a mob of kids race to find tasty hidden treasures!

In both cases, always be mindful of where you hide the eggs and consider the age range of your hunters. Think like a savvy, safety-conscious bunny and avoid sharp edges, spiky plants, large holes (even rabbit-sized ones), or anything that requires climbing too high. Clever hidey-holes offer more of a challenge for teens and adults, but keep it safe, sweet and simple for children. If you opt for the park adventure, ensure you set a boundary line and let the children know where they can and can’t hop.

Indoor fun

Rainy day? No problem. Indoor hunts can be just as fun with a little clever thinking. The beauty of an indoor hunt is the endless hiding place possibilities. Use every room to your advantage and mix up your strategy, making sure that children are able to safely reach their eggs without having to climb on any furniture – and keep anything unsuitable for them out of grabbing distance!

Tuck eggs behind picture frames, under pillows, or in cupboards, and throw in a few hidden-in-plain-sight options. You can even sneak a few into your children's rooms while they’re sleeping. Just remember to keep a count of the eggs – no one wants a lost chocolate Easter egg getting squished into your newly cleaned carpet!

Whether you plan an outdoor or indoor hunt, always ensure that your hidden treats are kept out of reach of your household pets.

Choose the right chocolate eggs

The key to a great Easter egg hunt is variety! Mix up your selection with a few big-ticket eggs, smaller eggs, and tasty treats that are easy to hide.

Set up the perfect Easter egg hunt

The big day is finally here, and it’s time to make Easter chocolate magic! Pop those bunny ears on, line up the Easter baskets, and get cracking.

Choose hiding places for all ages

To get the most fun out of your Easter egg hunt, there are a few things you need to consider. For younger children, keep the eggs in easy-to-spot locations. On or under chairs, behind or inside flowerpots, under stairs, or near a tree are all great options. Older kids need more of a challenge, so go for areas where there’s more camouflage, like inside bushes or on low-hanging tree branches that they can easily reach from the ground A great tip is to colour-code the eggs by the age of the children, so the older kids don’t pinch all the easy-to-find treasures!

Add special reward eggs

If you want to bump up the festivities, include a few special eggs. Kids love the thrill of finding something rare and exciting, and few can resist the fairytale lure of a golden egg. Simply take a yellow or gold-coloured egg and hide a clue within it to the hiding place of a special Easter prize, such as one of our Incredible Eggs . Whoever finds the golden egg wins the prize of the day.

Include fun clues and mini challenges

An interactive hunt is a fun way to go, and kids love chasing clues and doing silly challenges. Treasure maps are a great way to guide the game instead of it descending into chaos, while also giving little explorers a chance to use their map-reading skills. Tuck riddles or clues into eggs to steer children to their next destination. You can mark out treasure-filled areas with coloured ribbons for the littlest ones, which helps them recognise that they’re in the right place. Lastly, set a timer for the hunt and remember to keep your clues simple, or you’ll be there all day!

Ideas for Easter games and activities

For extra Easter giggles, create mini challenges like Pin the Tail on the Bunny, or see who can hop on one leg for the longest time. The classic Egg-and-Spoon race is always a favourite, as well as an Easter Basket Toss. Simply set up a small basket at a manageable distance for the kids, then give them 20 seconds to toss sweets or small eggs into it. The child with the highest score wins a prize, but no need to go overboard on the reward as the main draw will be the game itself.

For a more traditional activity, get the kids to paint their own Easter egg. This one takes a bit of preparation, but it’s easy.

  1. Take a fresh egg and use a metal or wooden skewer to poke a hole in the top and bottom.
  2. Gently blow through the eggshell to remove the egg contents.
  3. Carefully wash it to remove any residue and leave it until dry.
  4. Insert a cocktail stick so the child can hold onto it easily, or use an egg cup.
  5. Set your child up with newspapers, acrylic craft paints and paintbrushes, and let them go wild!

That’s an Easter wrap

With a little planning and a dash of creativity, your egg hunt can be the highlight of the Easter holiday! Sure, it takes a bit of effort, but seeing the absolute joy on children’s faces when the magic unfolds is priceless. Easter will always be filled with chocolatey treats, but the real reward is in creating sweet moments and cherished memories with family and friends.
